Hello everyone!

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday. I have been working on getting things ready for spring convention. We are so very lucky to have James Waslaski come to Iowa to present this class. This has never been presented in Iowa before. They launched it last year at the World Massage
Festival. I am so excited to see everyone and learn with James! Please get those (  REGISTER FORMS ) filled out! We will be holding the convention March 21-22, 2020 at the Double Tree by Hilton in Cedar Rapids, IA.

I have also secured the location for the Fall convention which will be in Cedar Falls at the Holiday Inn & Suites Waterloo Convention Center. I am very excited to be in the Cedar Falls area. The center is absolutely amazing.

See you all in March 21 & 22, 2020 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Welcome to 2020 AMTA members, I hope you all are having a fantastic start to this new year. This year looks to be an exciting year with our National Convention in Arizona. Welcome to all of our new members which has now officially moved our chapter over 1,000 members. I would like to personally thank each of you that have gone to any of our events, including Lobby Day on February 4th in Des Moines at the capitol.
Serving as the AMTA-IA Chapter President these last 2 years has been an honor and I look forward to seeing you all at the spring convention in Cedar Rapids. Feel free to contact any of the board members if you would be interested in helping out at convention. We are always looking for individuals to not only help out at conventions but also to join our board and help lead our chapter.

When I look at the caliber of therapists that we have here in the state of Iowa, and the education both given and received, it becomes clear to see that our chapter and its members are one the the best in the country.

Board Member 2/Education Chair Report:

I attended the Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP) and Leadership Training at the National AMTA Convention in Indianapolis in 2019. In those trainings, we were given many ideas to infuse our chapter conventions, create networking opportunities, and provide a voice for our members. We had a 1) HUB overview of using the national website, 2) Servant Leadership seminar to understand how to be collaborative with various leadership styles, 3) Storytelling for AMTA to capture narratives of our members. We were also encouraged to build the AMTA community in our state. Some highlights included encouraging members to volunteer on the spot at the state conventions with tasks that need to be done for the convention to be successful. At our next conventions, we are looking for help to 1) set up registration table, 2) make swag bags, 3)check in members, 4) greet members at the door and help them find their way, 5) AMTA press person: gather narratives about why you are a member of the Iowa AMTA Chapter, and 6) be an AMTA Convention Photographer to catch people having fun at the convention and posting to social media with the #AMTAIOWA. 7) If you enjoy posting to social media like facebook, instagram and twitter, please speak with a board member to volunteer in that capacity.

In the trainings we were also urged to create more ways to network during our state convention. Some ideas were a Massage Mingle similar to speed dating; Find Your Sole Mate: meet someone new with a similar shoe and having a 5 minute conversation; DOTS: put colored dots on name tags at registration to encourage conversations during breaks and mealtimes within color groups. Capture narratives by having members fill out a paper with “My AMTA Story” that could be published in the newsletter or on social media is another way that we can meet our members and hear their stories. It is important to catch the stories of our newest members, so we can welcome them and hear their first impressions of our state and national gatherings.

SUGGESTION BOX: I will plan to have post it notes and a poster up at convention so our members can share their suggestions for our Iowa AMTA chapter for all to see.

As requested by the board, I will make copies of the professional AMTA publications for our next PR events such as Lobby Day at the Capital, Spring and Fall State Conventions, and Massage School Fairs. The copies I will print to have on hand are: 25 Reasons to Get A Massage, MT for Surgery, MT for Cancer Care, our Wallet Page of CE requirements, and some Massage Therapy Foundation Research pages. Our Legislative Chair said our lobbyist requested ways to look more professional at our PR events.

Thank you to President, Robert for handling our National Phone Number.

Greetings!

Well, the 2020 legislative session is in full swing now. Our lobbyist is hard at work for us at the Capitol. Keep an eye on your inbox as that is how I will be getting all the legislative information out to you. We are looking forward to our 3rd annual Lobby Day at the Capitol on February 4th. We know it will be a success! Check out the attached board meeting minutes for what we discussed at the quarterly meeting on the 25th. There is a good recap of our legislative agenda for this year. Please do reach out to me if you have any questions or comments. Thank you!

10 Ways to Volunteer at Spring Convention
by Karen Sindelar, Board Member 2, Education Chair

I attended the Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP) and Leadership Training at the National AMTA Convention in Indianapolis in 2019. In those trainings, we were given many ideas to infuse our chapter conventions, create networking opportunities, and provide a voice for our members. We had a 1) HUB overview of using the national website, 2) Servant Leadership seminar to understand how to be collaborative with various leadership styles, 3)Storytelling for AMTA to capture narratives of our members.

We were also encouraged to build the AMTA community in our state.

Some highlights included encouraging members to volunteer on the spot at the state conventions with tasks that need to be done for the convention to be successful.

At our next convention, we are looking for help to:

1) set up registration table,

2) make swag bags,

3) check in members,

4) greet members at the door and help them find their way,

5) be an AMTA press person: gather narratives about why you are a member of the Iowa AMTA Chapter,

6) be an AMTA Convention Photographer to catch people having fun at the convention and posting to social media with the #AMTAIOWA.

7) be a Social Media Guru: If you enjoy posting to social media like facebook, instagram and twitter, please speak with a board member to volunteer in that capacity.

8) Write “My AMTA Story” to be posted at convention and maybe shared electronically.

9) Contribute to the “Suggestions for Iowa AMTA” poster

10) Network to meet new colleagues, (learn how to make a digital business card on Friday night)

The Iowa AMTA board is like a second family to me. I hope that you will volunteer as you are able and join this extended family of supportive massage therapists to continue to grow this AMTA Iowa family tree.
